My Pregnancy: 11 weeks

Hello, Rachel!

Your baby, just over 1 1/2 inches long and about the size of a fig, is now almost fully formed. Her hands will soon open and close into fists, tiny tooth buds are beginning to appear under her gums, and some of her bones are beginning to harden. She's already busy kicking and stretching, and her tiny movements are so effortless they look like water ballet. These movements will become more frequent as her body grows and becomes more developed and functional. You won't feel your baby's acrobatics for another month or two — nor will you notice the hiccupping that may be happening now that her diaphragm is forming.

"We've told only our immediate family and my best friend. We're waiting a week or two more to go public, which is getting hard because I've already 'popped.'" — Kathryn

One baby is born about every eight seconds in the United States. That's an average of about 11,000 babies each day.

Your Body This Week:

Safe exercises, weight gain, and helping your vitamin go down
Helping your vitamin go down easier
Some women say trying to choke down their prenatal vitamin every morning contributes to their nausea. If you're one of them, try these tips:
• Take your vitamin after a meal or just before bed.
• Cut your tablet in half — smaller pieces are easier to swallow.
• Choose a prenatal vitamin without calcium (calcium is bulky and increases the size of tablets). You can get your calcium separately through chewable supplements.
• Ask your caregiver for vitamins that are chewable or that have a slick coating so they can slide down your throat easier. Both of these options are available by prescription.
Have you been exercising regularly? If not, now's a great time to come up with a plan. Exercise promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance — three qualities that can help you carry the weight you gain during pregnancy, prepare you for the physical stress of labor, and speed your recovery after your baby's born. What's safe: Swimming and walking are excellent choices for the whole nine months. What's not safe: Any contact or extreme sport, any activity with a high risk of falling or other injury, and scuba diving. If you're not sure about the safety of your favorite activities, talk to your caregiver.

Don't worry if nausea has made it impossible for you to eat a wide variety of healthy foods or if you haven't put on much weight yet (most women gain just 2 to 5 pounds during the first trimester). Your appetite should return soon, and you'll start to gain about a pound a week. In the meantime, eat what you can and keep taking your prenatal vitamin every day to fill in the gaps.

When should I worry about abdominal cramps?

Starting early in pregnancy, progesterone slows your digestive tract, which can make you feel bloated, gassy, and uncomfortable. Constipation can be a problem as well. These things can cause some lower abdominal cramping that's uncomfortable but harmless. However, if you have cramps that are accompanied by bleeding or are especially severe, it could be a sign of miscarriage, says Dr. Gil Gross, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University in St. Louis. If you're concerned, call your caregiver.
