Rara Baby: 12th Weeks

Hello, Rachel!

The most dramatic development this week: Reflexes. Your baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won't be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder. From crown to rump, your baby-to-be is just over two inches long (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce.

"Most of my symptoms have lessened, and I'm not showing yet. Sometimes I feel like it's not real — as if the blood and urine tests at the doctor's were just a fluke." — Nicki

Studies show there's no truth to the notion that a baby's heart rate can predict whether you're carrying a boy or a girl.

Your Body This Week:

Waist thickening, how to cool heartburn, and food aversions
Cooling the heat of heartburn

• Eat small meals throughout the day and chew thoroughly.
• Avoid foods that make the problem worse, such as fried, spicy, fatty, or acidic foods. Chocolate and mint are common culprits, too.
• Skip carbonated and caffeinated beverages, as well as citrus juices. Limit fluids during meals.
• Wait at least two hours after eating before lying down, and sleep propped up so your stomach acids stay in your stomach.
• Ask you caregiver to recommend a calcium-based over-the-counter antacid.
• If these measures don't help, talk to your caregiver about prescription heartburn medications that are safe during pregnancy.
Your uterus has grown to the point where your healthcare provider can now feel the top of it (the fundus) low in your abdomen, just above your pubic bone. Though you probably won't need maternity clothes for several more weeks yet, you've no doubt noticed that your waist is thickening and that you're more comfortable in loose, less restrictive clothing.

You may also start getting heartburn (also called acid indigestion), a burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of your breastbone to your lower throat. It's caused by both hormonal and physical changes in your body — and can take the pleasure out of eating a meal or sleeping.

Why do I have food aversions?

Nobody really knows why some pregnant women cringe at the sight of meat or heave at the smell of coffee, although there are some theories. Many women experience a heightened sense of smell while pregnant, which may account for some food aversions. Some scents — like garlic, for instance — can be too potent to seem palatable. Because progesterone slows down the digestive tract, which may lead to constipation and indigestion, pregnant women may also instinctively stay away from meats and gassy veggies like broccoli that can be hard to digest, says Dr. Gil Gross, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University in St. Louis.
